  TSHolden.com - History

the history of tentusonline

A long time ago, Tentus really wanted a website. So he made one, and lo, it sucked. But he labored long and hard, and it grew and became better. About December 14th of 2006, he managed to make something worth visiting, and thus chose that date to be the true "birth" of the site. (Think of the previous versions as rough drafts we should avoid talking about). Knowing that his website was now good and worthy of reading, Tentus made a system to record the growth of the site, in the form of a History page. This page grew to contain the following:

arrow1 Artwork
arrow1 Rants
arrow1 Chibi Pages
arrow1 Recent Newsposts
arrow2 More Newsposts: The first 50
arrow2 Yet More Newsposts: The third 100
arrow2 Still More Newsposts: Up to 150
arrow2 Even More Newsposts: Continuing to 200
arrow2 Why So Much History: The 201st to 250th Newsposts
arrow2 Endless History: The 251st to 300th Newsposts
Art, Comics, Rants, and new Pages are shown on the calendars on the right- if both Art and Rants have been uploaded, it shows as A+R. Pages are overwritten by any of the others, because a new Art Comic or Rant involves making new pages. Other questions about the calendar are possibly answered here.

Due to last week's delay, today's update is a double spread, which I cannot wait to see in print. Also, if you haven't noticed, I have made a new site design for SC, though I'm not 100% about it yet. Too white.
Media Comment: No time for new media this week, I have been overworked with creating new site backends.

Ok, here's a link to today's page. It's a quick cover concept, I'm going to try to make a low-poly Okami-style comic in the near future.
Media Comment: Too much to do in this game. I kind of feel like amortizing the gameplay out to my siblings... make my sister do the photography-inventing aspect, get my brother to do the city-building and fishing, and then I do the dungeon grinding and weapon building. Great game, just kinda overwhelming.

Current Media: My Neighbor Totoro

I know that you're all sick of excuses by now, and trust me, no one hates the delays more than I. It's been a trying week, and today's page (and last week's page) just haven't materialized. The upside of this is that what is supposed to be today's page is definitely a lump-update, so in a way it's good that it's delayed.
Now I must go collapse. Summer classes have been killing me, and I am afraid that my coworkers and I are breeding a new strain of influenza among us.
Media Comment: Beautiful animation and art. Why isn't modern anime this good-looking? Totoro was made in bloody 88.

Current Media: Fruits Basket

I almost didn't do an update today, but I love you this much. I should be working on my finance problems, in preparation for my test tomorrow (today), but I honestly consider this higher-priority right now.
Media Comment: Yeah, I had forgotten how endearing this anime is. The manga is kinda freaky (not that the anime isn't too), but it's definitely an enjoyable show (animation is starting to show it's age though).

Current Media: Ratchet and Clank (PS2)

I'm having to reorganize big chunks of my comic, because last week's script bugged me until I scrapped it and quite a few more scripts. The visuals just weren't proceeding such that readers 'got' what was going on. So while I am reorganizing, I've added an inside cover and done some minor tweaks to all the pages.
This culminates in the drawing for today's page not being done. The layout was easy, because it's the same as the old page, so right now you've just got panels. My plan is to do all the drawing tomorrow night.
Media Comment: Picked this up in the bargain bin, and I must say, it is putting a serious dent in my study time. Very addictive game, though it can be very frustrating. I wish that there were more things you could wander off and do when a sequence is frustrating you: I keep getting all the hidden things, because I'm mad at a particular ledge or something.

Today's update is the reason that Friday's page is yet undone. I am finally getting that page to a level that I'm happy with, but it is not easy going. :P
BTW, my new design over at Artwalk went live today. There's still some bugs I need to iron out, but in general it is much more attractive.
Media Comment: Mm, Moyashimon. Such a good show. I'm watching it with several bros at the moment (separately, to boot).

Playing with my new Wacom Bamboo has been fun, and resulted in today's update: a touch of nerd humor. Hope you guys like it.
Media Comment: With Asura Cryin' turning out pretty meh, I have turned to one of my guilty pleasures: hilariously perverse anime about high-school girls + romance. Shows like Hatsukoi Limited never fail to cheer me up when I'm feeling down.

New SC is up, hope you gus like it. It's a bit nonsensical without color though (how does Evan pull off b/w so well after drawing nearly half a thousand color pages?)
Media Comment: Graphic novels lent to me by a close friend. They're very good, though my favorite chapter is the most out of place (it's the one where they meet up every 100 years).

Current Media: Star Trek (again)

So after some consideration, I realized that updating SC on Fridays would be a better idea than updating it on Mondays. This had nothing to do with me spending all weekend on another project. ¬_¬
Speaking of, here's the documentation on said project. You guys should download the SVN, it's a pretty neat little project.
Media Comment: Yeah, it was good enough to see again.

We're changing gears today. After talking in person with some of my readers, I've decided to change my update schedule to SC once a week and a tsholden update once a week. This will give me more time to plan out details, and keep my old-timers happier.
So, without further rambling, here is today's update: a whole new chapter of Holocene Pax.
Media Comment: Wow, what a sweet movie. I would watch this religiously if it was a TV show. There were a few things I didn't like (lens flare) but it was all balanced out by "Are You out of your Vulcan mind?"

Current Media: Eden of the East

And I'm back with a proper new page, to replace the old filler page! Go Team!
Tried out a new hair-drawing technique. Came out ok, but I'm not sure I'm a big enough fan to pick up entirely. It takes more time, for sure.
Media Comment: Eden of the East continues to be sweet-ass but also very confusing. If you're not following it, you should be.

Current Media: Nastsu no Arashi

Whoops, forgot to post on this site that I'm (sort of) back. There's not a new page or anything, but an explaination of why there's not a new page.
Media Comment: Unlike a lot of anime, which starts good and then declines, Nastsu no Arashi has kind of a terrible opening and then starts to grow on you. The goofy opening is fun, but some of the character art is lacking (and they frequently screw up the perspective with their faces).

Bad news, guys: schoolwork has finally overtaken me, so I'm having to call a one week hiatus while I finish this semester up. I'll try to come up with some filler content, but no promises. I also can't promise that this won't turn into a two week hiatus: I hate to say it, but I have really been dropping the ball lately and might not be able to get everything finished in just one week. :(
In good news, one of the projects I'm working on is a port of my Kerberos Battle Engine, over to the Wii. So that'll be fun once it's done.
Media Comment: Too much work to be done, sorry.

I've decided to go ahead and put up the panel layouts for the next page, but I have to confess that Nashi-con offset my whole shcedule by a full day... including hanging out with my bro and finishing Toradora. :) Sorry? I promise the artwork will be up tomorrow, and in the meantime, check out the cool new page numbers.
Media Comment: This is going to be the next show Nashaii and I watch on a regular basis: it looks like it's going to be a great show (the ending sequence is beyond sweet). There are a lot of things they're doing very very right, and I hope more animes will follow suit.

Current Media: Waltz With Bashir

The art for today's page could have been touched on more, but I needed to prep my digital ahead of schedule: going down to Nashi-con this weekend will cause disruptions in my upload schedule.
Media Comment: If you get a chance to see Waltz With Bashir, I highly recommend it, particularly if you like my comic, they have a lot in common (sorta). It's a painfully gripping movie, utilizing the exact opposite of the normal storytelling drive: you realy don't want to know what happens next, but you're going to watch it anyways.

Current Media: Asura Cryin'

I decided to stop redrawing the last page and focus on the next one, only to run into the same problem: I am severly lacking in reference for the girl. Oh well, I'll redraw the center panel tomorrow. :(
BTW, I managed to get that new feature up and running that was thwarting me last Friday: if you hover over page 7, the dialog now shows up properly (pure CSS-y goodness, yesssssss). I've also added a code snippet that will annoy the crap out of IE users: the reason for this is simple, I hate that browser and want you to upgrade for your own good.
Media Comment: Ooohh, not what I expected at all. Too early to make a judgement on this anime, but it definitely has my attention: we'll see if the story holds water or not in a few episodes. :)

Current Media: Shigofumi

No page today either: I had a pretty cool Sandstorm feature to show off, but then at the last minute I found a show stopping bug (friggin inconsistencies), which might take a while to fix, because I'm pretty much having to scrap what I've already written. We'll just call this an off week and I promise I'll come back full-force next week.
Media Comment: You start Shigofumi and think 'Oh, this could be cute.' Then you get to the end of the first episode. o_0 You then spend the rest of the night watching the rest of the show, because it is incredibly arresting. This show gets top marks for making me think more than 99% of the other animes I've watched.

Current Media: Zoku Natsume Yuujin-chou

The last page in SC continues to defy me, so I'm posting some other stuff as today's update. Specifically, I am putting up a crude typesetter I have thrown together to alow you to type in Yarboan. This is quite a graphical challenge, because the language laid out totally different from an indo-european langauge.
The other big update is that SC now has its own independant domain and hosting: I put in some extra hours at the office the past few weeks, and invested that extra money into getting some new hosting. Things are looking up for SC. :)
Media Comment: Man, talk about a show that can shine when it wants to. Some of the stories are just so touching it hurts. I'm a huge fan of the episode "The Promised Tree", it very almost made me cry. (That might be because I've been very emo as of late).

Current Media: Wall-E

Double digits starting today, whoo! This page is rather rushed, because I delayed starting on the girl much much too long (she always takes 10x as long to draw as the guys.
Media Comment: I'm a latecomer to this one, but Wall-E was awesome. I loved every second of that movie, it was extremely well done. If you like movies period you should watch it. (Oh, and last ep of Toradora was fantastic... at last an anime with a decent ending).

Current Media: Toradora

Today's page... doesn't translate into just linework very well. My production process had me setting up the textures for the first panel long before the art for it was produced, after which I realized that the first panel doesn't stand up very well without the textures to provide full context. Oh well.
I added in a new feature to the site. If you replace the page number in the url with 'latest', 'last', 'first', or 'start', you'll go to those places. If I ever somehow work up 314 pages, I'm totally adding 'pi' to that feature too. =D
Media Comment: Two of my bros (one literal, one metaphorical) got up with me this weekend and we had a Toradora marathon. Sooooooooo good. Taiga is friggin toradorable. (See what I did there?)

Current Media: SXSW Torrent 1

This page came together much quicker, because I didn't have to draw the girl. Whoo! Too bad that I ran into some new shortcomings. Anyhow, check out the new linework, look for color tomorrow night, as usual. Dialog is probably going to happen soon, which leaves me considering a site feature: the dialog will be in Yarboan, so it might help fan-lators if I keep an interactive index of used words at the bottom on each page, or perhaps a matrix on it's own page. Thoughts?
Media Comment: Ladyboy has to be one of the funniest songs I've ever heard.

Current Media: SXSW Torrent 3

Aaaaaagh I hate drawing female face. I don't want to say how many pages of drawing paper I went through sketching the first panel of today's page: suffice to say that it was a lot. This page actually ended up being a lot of trouble to draw, because it's all stuff I'm not good at.
What do people think of the new Sandstorm Conscience layout? I've been tweaking it a lot the last few days, trying to make it more attractive and consistent. I've also beefed up the comic page navigation: you get your preference of giant arrow images, clicking on the page itself, or text links. Should be more than enough for most people.
Media Comment: If you haven't downloaded the (legal!) torrents of SXSW music, you totes should. A lot of it is quite good.

Current Media: Hunter: The Gathering (Xbox)

I mentioned some site revisions on Monday: unfortunately those revisions have taken a good bit more time than I anticipated, so my linework isn't done today. :( However, the design is pretty much done, I've already put it online and everything: I just need to optimize it now. Also, I need to find out why the domain I purchased isn't propagating properly.
Media Comment: Playing this game with an old friend and having a blast. Some of the old Xbox titles were great and no one realized it.

Current Media: Hidamari Sketch

Ok, I'm trying something new. Starting today, I am going to upload just the lineart and text, and then 24 hours later I will change it to the fully colored and shaded version. Why? Because this isn't something anyone else is doing, to the best of my knowledge, and it allows me to smooth out my workload. Most importantly, it gives readers to see the design process in action, and hopefully give them insight into how much the digital aspect of my production affects the end piece.
Oh yeah, today's page can be found here (or via the panel on the left). I'm planning to do some site revisions soon to make it more webcomic-friendly.
Media Comment: Hidamari is fun and interesting (and sometimes bizarrely erotic), but it can be very difficult to follow. I feel like the show has a ton of stuff to communicate and no time to ensure that you got it (which is ok with me, I have a rewind function).

Current Media: Watchmen

As you will notice from my Media choice for today, I am off to watch Watchmen, so here is a sneak peak at the page that's going up. Notice how I'm halfway through the texturing process, starting from the bottom up. All the sketching is done, but no shading at all: a very solid midpoint. (Edit: texturing is done, online).
Media Comment: Watchmen was good times. I deliberately avoided learning anything about the series so I could walk into the movie with a blank slate, enjoy it, and now go buy the book and enjoy it even more. I thought it was a very well-done movie, and loved most of the acting. (Was kind of perturbed by some of the stuff the audience laughed at though... Watchmen contains some extremely not-funny moments in it, so why were some people still laughing?)

Current Media: Samurai 7

Edit: My whole state is basically shut down by snow, so I had a chance to touch up the SC pages with better shading and fontwork for the cover page. :) Now to build up a buffer (haha, like I'd be able to stand having one...)
Again with the texturing, gah. This week's first page is up, hopefully I won't get so carried away with Friday's.
Media Comment: Watched the whole Samurai 7 series this weekend (in japanese, of course). I liked it, though the absolutely hideous art in episode 7 seemed very out of place in the midst of the otherwise very well-executed series. Some of the physics flaunting stuff seemed poorly thought out and animated (the redwood crossbow, for example), but most of the action was really good.

Posting this a tad late, I got caught up in texturing and forgot that this is still an initial version. :( Anyhow, you can find the new SC page here. Man, look at how much my faces have improved in the past year... I guess the deciding factor will be whether I can replicate those faces or not.
In life-y news, I have had one of the worst weeks I've had in years. For example, I have to go to the physical trainer again tomorrow (today?) because I have busted up my knee from a biking accident. Or, on a longer range example, my very exciting trip to England with my old Arthurian Legends class was cancelled this week. So no internation experiences for me this year. :(
Media Comment: Ghost Hound has certainly gotten much better as I dig into it deeper. The mix of real phsycology (my dad's a therapist, and can confirm that this stuff is currently believed to be true) with fantasy is great, it really draws you in. Also, I'm finding the little romance subplot to be just too cute.

Current Media: Ghost Hound

First off, hello to everyone coming over from Rice Boy, I hope you enjoy my site! Sorry it's not as unified as Evan's content, but there you have it. Anyhow...
New SC page is up! Admittedly, this one could have been done in 5 minutes by a middle-schooler, but it represents a lot of effort so far as preplanning and culture design.
In other comic news, I'm almost ready to start producing the basic vocabulary for Yarboan: the alphabet is finished, I redid the numbering system today, and the grammar is mostly finished. I'm hoping to have enough done by next week that I can make a perfectly formed sentence for the comic.
Media Comment: I'm not a big fan of the pacing of Ghost Hound (I believe that it is deliberately difficult, but still...) and the art style seems to jitter a bit from very well-textured to kinda flat. Still, I commend them for tackling such an interesting premise, and I hope that I continue to enjoy the season as I work through it.

Current Media: -

And so begins a new regime. I'm trying out a unique idea: I'm calling it an exponential comic. 1 day to decide to do it, 2 days to come up with a story premise, 4 days to come up with character designs and other specifics, 8 days to lay down the rough sketches and layouts, and then 16 days to do the full art. In a single month you have a more-or-less finished coming.
I've already done the first 6 days, so here's the first sketch as a title page. I'm going with the working title Roda Jogo, and hope to actually have the dang thing done this time next month. To that end, you guys are just going to be getting comics for a while. Enjoy!
Media Comment: I haven't had a single spare moment to watch anime or do anything this week, I've been so mired down with work and hardware trouble. :P

Current Media: Sketchbook Full Colours

I have written an ungodly amount of code this weekend, but I'm not at liberty to talk about it, so I guess you're spared that ramble. In other news, my life is way too hectic (oh wait, that's the same news...)
This particular update is a new charcter to the Sandstorm Conscience cast: hopefully you'll get to meet him better in the upcoming weeks, because I'm planning to kick into high gear, artwise. I've been relying on digital way too much these past few months.
Media Comment: It's weird how I love animes that have almost no plot to them, just life. But I find something fun and touching in these animes that pull it off, and plus, the cats in Sketchbook are ridiculously cute.

Current Media: Asu no Yoichi

This has been a curious week in a number of ways. I've gotten a lot of work and research done on side projects, but my main jobs and classes are lagging behind. Huh.
Anyway, check this junk out: one of my side projects needed a logo. :) It's nothing fancy or professional, but I think it communicates what I'm going for.
Media Comment: Asu no Yoichi is consistently funny through the first five episodes, I hope they keep up the pace (though it's hard to picture how they're going to do so). Curiously, I find that I really like the voice acting for Chihaya, even though I hated the voice for Eclair in Ouran (both were done by Yukari Tamura). Maybe I just hated Eclair.

Current Media: I don't even know...

Back! From WTH Con! In one piece, no less! Amazing!
So, in keeping with widespread con tradition, I am putting up a con-centric doodle as my update today. I had the good fortune to sit in on Jennie Breedan's art panel, and it gave me some good food for thought- we may see some long-lasting effects of her advice over the next few months.
Now, sleep!

Current Media: Auditorium

Had some trouble with my network last night and wasn't able to make the upload. Truth to be told, I gave up, went to bed, and hoped it would be working this morning- which of course it wasn't. So now I've got a massive CAT5E cable running from the far corner of my house to where I'm sitting now. Sorry about the delay and all.
Today is actually a double edition! (See what I did there?) I have made significant updates to not only my Coding for Artists rant (a menu at the beginning, improved ui, more examples, and cute little illustrations), but also a completely redrawn version of Pout! I can see how it's tempting for artists to go back and redrawn their archives... it just gets so embarrassing so fast.
Media comment: I purchased the full version of Auditorium, and you should too! Especially since their asking price is $11, I mean, I spend more than that on two normal meals.

Current Media: Sauerbraten SVN

I'm starting this month out with a digital, and it's probably going to be followed by a series of digitals: I just don't have the time to work on the other sections. :'( Anyhow, give it a look, it came out ok.
Media comment: The SVN version of Sauerbraten is easy to get and use- if you have Tortoise installed. Just don't try to use it on an existing folder, bad stuff can happen (or more precisely, not happen).

Current Media: Pumpkin Scissors

The image for today is a bit of fanart that I'm releasing the source file of as well. If you haven't heard me gushing about Moyashimon, you should check back through the history pages.
Media comment: One of my siblings gave me the manga for Pumpkin Scissors, and I liked it quite a bit, so I have been very pleased with how loyal the anime is to the books. Music is absolutely rockin, too.

Current Media: Yakitate Japan

Surprise Wednesday update! I have brought the Looking to Hire page a bit up to date and made it more attractive.
Media comment: This series makes me tremendously hungry all the time. I like the characters (most of them), and the general handling of the series makes it a good laugh. The sub that I'm using is also quite nice, in that it notes and explains the puns.

Current Media: Temple of the Winds

For today I've decided to put up a new chapter of Holocene, even though it's a shorter chapter than I'd like. I originally planned the conversation to touch on a number of other topics, but the flow worked better when I divided it in two.
Media comment: The Sword of Truth novels aren't lasting me as long as they used to. I seem to remember them lasting more than 1 1/2 days apeice. Whatever, still fun to read.

Current Media: Azumanga Daioh

Tonight's update is a new concept drawing of the girl (I should go ahead and reveal her name, but...) this time going in a rather different direction than I usually take her.
Media comment: This show is great for rainy days. The characters are blindingly vibrant, and the animation/art style fits like a shoe. (Which is an odd saying, now that I think about it...) Anyhow, great fun to watch, but also exhausting- I'm having to take a break after watching too many in a row. :P

Current Media: Wizard's First Rule

The next chapter of Holocene Pax is up. I have also given the story an index page and done some misc writings updates. I promise that Kerberos is not abandoned, but simply stuck (actually, that's probably not much better...)
Media comment: Oh Terry Goodkind, why must you write such long books that keep me from getting any work done on the weekends? I have such a ridiculous weakness for good fantasy lit.

Current Media: Legend of the Seeker

Today's update was going to be a pretty neat flash animation, but I had trouble getting an essential resource, so instead I'm sharing a website rough draft. It's a bit different than the usual, and I like it from a technical viewpoint.
Media comment: Legend of the Seeker would be better if I weren't such a fan of the books. If you can look past some of the little problems, it's actually a pretty decent fantasy show. (Little things like the Agiel used by Denna being much too large bother me- that's never going to fit around RR's neck later on).

Current Media: Toradora

Today school starts again, and I've also decided to officially resume midnight updates. Or, you know, midnight-ish. Anyhow. Here's the update for today, hope you guys like backstory. This junk has been rolling around for quite a while.
Media comment: Toradora is extremely funny and cute. I want a palmtop tiger in my life! This is one of the very few animes I've watched that's ongoing, so it's weird waiting for the next one to come out.

Current Media: Zombie-Loan

It's been a while since I posted a doodle, so here's one I drew last night. Also, even though I said I wasn't updating on Wednesdays, I completely lied: yesterday and the day before I made a series of revisions to every page on the site, which will hopefully make them load more consistently and help future adjustments. I didn't announce it because a) it was boring, and b) it was obscure enough changes that it very few people would completely follow what happen. So. See you next week (wish me luck on my new classes!)
Media comment: Zombie-Loan was entertaining, but felt kind of stilted. The writing for the characters felt just a little bit off, like they didn't quite sum up.

Current Media: Moyashimon

Well, balls. Updating this from a public computer, because we've got a work emergency. Today's update will probably not come up until late this evening, sorry. (I hate being late)
Finally. My apologies for this update being so late, it's been a rough day. Now I go to bed.
Media comment: I'm spreading Moyashimon like an infection to all of my friends. Heh heh heh.

Current Media: Moyashimon

First update of the year: a brand-new story I've started penning, on the encouragement of my fam. This story has been fermenting for a couple of years now, and shares a setting with several other projects of mine, so I'm going to start getting some of the ideas down.
In other news, this is the last week I'll do a Wednesday update for a while. I'm projecting a pretty intense workload this semester, and the quality of the past few months' uploads hasn't been anywhere near where I want it to be. So, sorry about that, but these things happen to everyone.
Media comment: Moyashimon is made of win, just because the subject matter is so damn weird.

Current Media: Haibane Renmai

Late update because I've been on the road all of today. I was planning to upload last night, but it didn't work out... I'm going to have to do some reconsidering soon. Today's update is a significantly updated version of the KS Logo, brought up to date a bit.
Media comment: Gonna watch Haibane Renmai again, because we were listening to the OST in the car earlier. Such a good anime.

Current Media: Monochrome Factor

It's been too long since I did a sketch (I always seem to feel that way...), so here's one concerning Sandstorm Conscience that I kinda like.
Media comment: Monochrome Factor is a lot of fun, though it does overuse the chibi art.

Current Media: Okami

Today's upload is a new Flash Rant entitled Coding for Artists. It's kind of a work in progress (I am deeply dissatisfied with it at this point), but it's still somewhat cool.
Media comment: Okami continues to be awesome, and that's about all there is to it.

Current Media: Kannagi

Hah hah, on time! Today's update is a revision to the Invasoren Helmet sketch I put up a while ago, with some level adjustments, complete color changes, and some extra detail added in. Not very CHristmassy, but whatever. Enjoy your holiday!
Media comment: Watched the 12th episode of Kannagi and was very impressed that they'ld break the mold so much. The more I watch the show the more I like it.

Current Media: Code Geass

I guess this is technically an edit, but it represents enough work to be a full update, IMO. Yesterday and this morning I spent a fair amount of time reformatting the Red Book, to include more color information and also tweaking the p`s and bonux information at the end.
Media comment: Code Geass kinda turned me off in the first episode, but as it's gained momentum I've been pretty pleased with it. I'm not a fan of the high-school segments, but the chess-like aspect of it is very good (though in one of the chess games they did make an illegal move, if I was following correctly... what's up with that?).
BTW, I do plan to update Wed and Fri, but they may be delay. You know, being the day before and after Christmas and all.
